Is It Scary? DEFINITELY.
We travelled to Crawley to visit this years Shocktober Fest at Tulley's Farm. With 8 mazes, The Circus of Horrors, live music and roaming actors, this is the scare event to go to. But how do we measure how scary it is? We used an Apple Watch in order to measure our heart beats throughout the mazes in order to see which mazes really got our blood pumping.
THE VILLAGE - COVEN OF 13
Alice Hemlock, Turners Hill
Was accused of causing ill.
A witch confirmed, tried and convicted,
Death upon her was afflicted.
Gather women, together strong
Vengeance for their cousin wronged.
But vengeance never stops at one
All to blame are cursed bar none.
And many others must bear guilt,
The bodies piled in mud and silt.
The women’s wrath is unconfined
The Coven feared and much maligned.
The purpose of the 13 strong
Is lost in who is right or wrong.
The thirst for blood and pain and death
Uttered in every cursing breath.
Turners Hill once rich and thriving
Now just 13 are left surviving.
Their souls are lost and black as pitch.
This village is held for the 13th witch.
Coven of 13 consisted of many unique effects such as inflatable walls to recreate the feeling of walking through water, as well as incredible smoke and laser effects which further continued this theme. A thick fog of smoke gave a great chance for clever actors to pop up and scare unexpecting guests.
The maze continued outside with a creepy cottege theme featuring some world class theming, some of the best of the night. This part of the maze had hiding places for actors meaning lots of jump scares therefore resulting in a large, suspenseful maze.
he Clowns are here as you expected
An unhappy band of souls neglected.
Painted smiles with sharpened teeth
A wicked purpose underneath
The painted colours in ultra violet
There’s nothing here for you to smile at.
Nothing here is what is seems,
The painted walls will echo screams
The layout is in three dimensions
And all our clowns have grave intentions.
So roll up, roll up, welcome in,
The Twisted Clowns 3D will put you in a spin.
We found this maze to be more of a fun experience rather than a fearful maze however there were some jump scares included. Covered in UV paint and lights and equipped with 3D glasses, you are transported in a trip world filled with clowns and 'loonies' and left conjuring what is reality and what is fake. Clowns ran around smashing walls and getting rather up close and personal yet we didn't believe there were enough actors within to really create a proper scare. This could easily be improved to become one of the best mazes.
THE CHOP SHOP
Howdy y'all. Billy-Bob here. You lookin' for a real nice vehicle? Well here at The Chop Shop we got trucks for your bucks. You need a trailer? A pick up? How about our speciality, a good old cut & shut? We got all the best old wrecks ready for you right here. And if we ain't got what you're lookin' for, well, perhaps my brother Billy-Joe and Billy-Ray can help you out with their special... renovations. You better be careful now, those two boys are real handy with a reconstruction, I'll be darned if you've never seen no one handle a chainsaw like Billy-Joe.
And if Billy-Ray asks you to lean down and look into the trunk, I'd run. Remember folks, once you go scrap you don't never go back. Ever.
Nothing we have done before compares to this attraction, ambushed by chainsaws craving for fresh meat, you fear for your life as you gasp for your breath constantly within the maze! Entering the maze into a car garage you were quickly taken to through to a freezer with dead meat hanging from the ceiling. A musky smell of chainsaws filled through the air and in the distance you could here the revving, still oblivious to the extremity of what you are about to face. Blood spattered walls and and slowly flashing strobe lights lead you through the long section where you are chased from all directions by pig with chainsaws. Accidentally breaking the rule of no running in the maze we darted through the maze fearing for our safety. This maze sets the bar for all scare mazes.
THE CELLER - IMPRISONED
The Cellar has long been a place where things are kept and forgotten. Lost things in the darkness scavenging to survive. But those that dwell in the Cellar have not been forgotten, they have been purposefully locked in. Imprisoned. Incarcerated. An experiment. What once was human is now a feral and malnourished murder of scavengers. Live These ‘Creatures’ have ransacked their ‘comfortable’ surroundings and turned it into a deadly game of cat and mouse. So when their captor releases the ‘live food’ into The Cellar they are the cat and YOU are the mouse.
This maze had the highest potential in our opinion, with incredible theming and scare opportunities however we found it lacked completely in across. Entering into this maze with high expectations from what we had previously heard, we were thoroughly disappointed. Walking through an abandoned farm house, we would have expected a lot more consistency to the maze due to the obvious theme however some parts seemed to be a bit mix and match, although scary such as the snake head, it seemed rather irrelevant. This could easily be a lot scarier with more actors within as we only encountered 4 within the 6 minute maze. Hopefully we just got unlucky however we are looking forward to seeing if there are any more next year!
I have lived, therefore, I am dead.
Life is constructed of moments of time. You live, time passes, you die, time continues. But what about the moment between life and death? They say that your whole life flashes before your eyes; all of that time played out in a single moment. A torturous, painful and tormented moment before finality. But time is a human construct, it does not exist. Your torment may be fleeting or forever, and you have chosen to experience VIXI before your time. The slaves of The Hellements know pain and fear and torture and the human nostalgia for time, and so they have decided to go Medieval! Look forward to seeing this again before you die.
This maze that tests all the senses. You enter the maze with a bag over your head and holding a rope with your left hand, you are lead into darkness. Being in the pitch dark, this maze depended on actors and effects including moving floors and fire blasts and cold fans which we did not seem relevant to the overall story line. Although sometimes making us jump, the actors within the maze seemed ineffective and therefore the maze felt rather tedious and boring until the large fire blast ending which took us all by surprise.
We found a major set back to this maze was the fact that the actors couldn't touch you. With the fact that your sight has gone, touching should be the key to this maze as there is very little opportunities for jump scares.
THE HORRORWOOD HAYRIDE
Explore the abandoned back lot......at the Horrorwood Film Studios Haunted Hayride! Back in the Golden Age of cinema, the Horrorwood film studios in their secret woodland location, were booming, full of glamour and intrigue and bursting with life. Now all old Horrorwood is bursting with is DEATH. After the terrible incident with the actor who played ‘The Woodsman’ the old studio was forced to close and all the movie sets and props remained abandoned in their woodland setting. Lots of actors lost their jobs, and were never on screen again, but worst of all, they lost their fame and celebrity. Some believe that the old actors from all of those years ago still act out the scenes of their glory days on the old set, unable to move on in this life, or the next. Lights, camera action!
If you want to take a break from walking around the haunts then the hayride is the place to go. Crammed onto a trailer, we were driven round different creepy Hollywood sets. But they were like no other! A mixture of cowboys, mummies and little orphan girls hopped aboard, getting up close and personal with everybody onboard. The use of scenery and props really enhanced the experience aswell as special effects such as fire balls and air cannons.
THE CREEPY COTTAGE
Throughout the years, the Haunted House has seen a lot of comings and goings and some say many of its previous inhabitants have stuck around, unable to pass over. That doesn’t mean to say the long standing tenants aren’t friendly. They’d like you to stay. Stay for a very long time. The spooks in here believe in a traditional welcome and will show you all around the house – even the winding corridors where the lights don’t work and the rooms where the floor boards have been eaten away by creepy crawlies. There’s a lot of long since passed family members hanging around in there too – it seems so cruel to bury them underground… Shocks and scares to bemuse and bewilder you. Once you get in, will they let you back out?
Although we found this the weakest maze, this was also advertised as having a low scare factor. The theming inside was second to none with uneven flooring creating the atmosphere you really were in a cottage We also only encountered 3 actors within the maze meaning that the suspense created often leaded to nothing. This is a great maze to start off your evening and 'get you in the mood' for the rest of the mazes but we recommend that you do not leave this till last as it may not live up to your expectations.
RATING: 4 /10
THE COLONY - DYSTOPIA
Survivors of the apocalypse are those who harbor the darkest hearts. Those who can survive the end of the world are the end of humanity. True humanity. Kindness, compassion and charity are no longer. These are souls of violence, malevolence and war. Survival of the fittest was never more apt but now a new threat has wracked The Colony. As theworld shook with debris and dark matter, the tectonic plates moved to create great gashes in the earth. A toxic gas from deep in the earth’s core escaped into the atmosphere. Now everyone’s days are numbered. But what will get you first? The poisonous air or the deadly inhabitants of The Colony? “Fair is foul and foul is fair. Fight through the fog and filthy air.”
This was the longest maze of the lot lasting 15 minutes. Entering through a twisted pathway of wooden supports, actors hid in every corner to surprise the unfortunate that were not paying attention. With a large mix of indoor and outdoor sections, you often felt like you were going round in circles and that the maze wouldn't end helping to add to the suspense. A dark section filled thickly with smoke and a dim red lights meant are group had to feel around constantly trying to work out where to go. It was a shame that there were not more actors in this section as this could have been the largest opportunity of the night for scares however we did have a couple. After further highly themed indoor and outdoor sections, it was time for the big finale however, we must admit it did seem irrelevant. Being chased out by a chainsaw is always a scary factor but it did not fit in with the tribal theme of the rest of the maze and made us think we had accidentally walked into the Chop Shop. None the less this was still an effective ending.
THE CIRCUS OF HORRORS
Blending Horror and Burlesque with Bizarre and unbelievable acts from an almighty cast all performed to live rock music.
The world famous Dr Haze and his army of freaks have arrived at ShocktoberFest and will be taking you deep into the heart of the Asylum where the most deadly dangerous & greatest Circus of Horrors performers from out inglorious past are detained inside the confines of the notorious Psycho Ward.
A rather different style of attraction was The Circus Of Horrors. The world renowned travelling freak show has brought the Big Top to Tulley's,
Featuring freakish acts that will make your stomach turn, this is an incredible display of talent, unusual skills and people just being freakish.
The shows run multiple times through the night and we highly suggest that you go!
From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, the theme of Halloween never stops. Around the farm there are different roaming actors: creepy clowns, stilt walkers and more, who all take you by surprise in a different way, making sure that even in the line for the hog roast you're fearing what's going to happen next. The roaming actors are definitely an asset to the farm in keeping your fear factor up!
